Canon EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro Lens Review

Published on November st, 2010

This was one of the very first lenses I purchased a long time ago when I wanted to shoot macro and portrait photography and from my personal experience I have loved this lens from day one.

The 60mm f2.8 Macro lens can focus down to 1:1 magnification and has the professional ultra sonic motor which we have come to love over the years.  Having said that I have found that the auto focusing on this lens isn’t as quick as my other USM lenses, however this is expectable because this is a macro lens.

If you’re looking to shoot macro photography but don’t have a massive budget then this maybe the lens you are looking for.  At only $390 with free delivery this lens offers quality at an affordable rate.

Many of the lenses I review on this website I only have for a few weeks and have to thoroughly test them in that period, however the Canon EF-S 60mm is a lens that I personally own and love.  I rarely take any unsharp photos with this lens and the ones that come out unsharp are due to me using the wrong camera settings.

One great advantage of the 60mm 2.8 is that it can be used in or outdoors and handles available light very well without the need of a flash.  Some large macro lenses struggle with available light indoors and often need to be mounted to a tripod to get rid of camera shake.  The low focal length of only 60mm means that this lens can handle light even in the darkest locations without the need of a tripod or flash.

One niggle I do have with this lens is that it doesn’t come with a lens hood.  This may seem petty but for $390 I would expect one.  Lens flare isn’t a trouble with this lens but I do like having a lens hood on the front simply because it protects the lens from my clumsiness.

If the Canon EF-S 60mm f2.8 isn’t on my camera body then you can be sure it’s in my camera bag simply because you never know when a good macro opportunity is going to present its self.

Overall this lens is an excellent macro lens, however I would say if you’re looking to photography flying insects then you may want to check out the Canon 100mm macro lens.  If however you want to photograph static objects or shoot portrait work then this lens offers excellent value.

The best place to buy this lens right now is from Amazon.com/canon/ef-s60mm where it’s on offer with free super saver delivery.
