Selective Coloring Photoshop Tutorial

Published on January th, 2011

Today i’m going to show you how to make certain colours of your image stand out while most of the image is an unsaturated.  There are many ways of doing this with an image.  Today i’m going to show you the way which I think is easiest.

1. Load your image.  I’m using the image below which was taken by binababy12

2.  Once you have your image loaded duplicate the layer by pressing CTRL and J. you should now see a new layer in the layers pallet like the image below.

Rename this layer “unsaturated”

3.  With the unsaturated layer selected press CTRL and U. This will bring up the hue/saturation box.  Slide the saturation slider all the way to the left (-100) this will now have turned your image black and white.  Click the ok button.

4. You should now have something like the image below.

Now select the eraser tool by clicking on it from the tool box menu or simply press the E key on your keyboard.  Select an eraser brush of 0% hardness and a suitable size.  This can be done by selecting the eraser and going to the top tool bar and clicking on the little down arrow to the right of the word brush.  This can be seen in the image below.

5.  With the eraser tool selected start rubbing out the areas in which you want the colour to appear, you should get something like the image below.

And when you have completed it you should get something like

6.  You can then use this technique on the eyes or any other part of the image.  Here is my final result.
